Don’t Hold Your Breath (2025)-in process
Don’t Hold Your Breath is a work in process, created during a powerful and fast paced residency at Slippery Rock University. From the start, the students poured their hearts into the work with such openness and gratitude. The piece explores a journey through jazz, Hip-Hop, and ends in a House dance celebration. In this work we are honoring the legacy of these forms while allowing the students to find their voices through movement. It’s physically demanding, but it’s also about emotional and personal release. In the beginning, many of the students were quiet, hesitant to speak or share, but over time they opened up, expressed themselves, and truly leaned into the process.
The title Don’t Hold Your Breath speaks to more than just the stamina required. It’s a reminder to speak up, to stand in your truth, and to not wait to be heard. It became a life lesson woven into the piece itself: use your voice, take up space, and trust in the power of your presence. By the end of the residency, we were all in tears, sitting in deep gratitude for the work, for the space we held together, and for the growth that happened in just a short amount of time. This experience was truly one for the books. Don’t Hold Your Breath will premiere in October 2025 at Slippery Rock University, and below you can catch a glimpse of the work in progress.
