The Gathering : In-Process
The Gathering is an immersive outdoor performance I’m currently developing and choreographing, performed by my project-based dance company. The work is set to premiere on August 16, 2025, at Samuel Bolden Park in Springfield, MA. This performance weaves together live DJ sets, poetry, and storytelling through dance to create a rich, vibrant celebration of culture. Audiences will experience an exchange of movement and sound that honors the roots, rhythms, and cultural impact of Street and Club dance forms.
Blending live performance with community engagement, The Gathering is both a destination and a meeting place. It creates space for both members of Street Dance culture and those unfamiliar with it to gather, connect, and celebrate. Inspired by my lived experience growing up immersed in Hip-Hop culture in Springfield, this 60-minute performance invites the audience into a personal, communal, and historical journey through American social dance shaped by the African Diaspora.
Created in collaboration with professional dance artists from New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Boston, and featuring myself as a performer, The Gathering invites us to feel with one another, to connect across differences, and to recognize our shared humanity. I chose the performance space intentionally as a site for reclaiming and elevating the histories embedded in Street and Club dance. These forms were born in public places: family gatherings, basketball courts, parks, driveways, basements, and clubs etc. By returning to these spaces through performance, I honor their origins while expanding their reach. The Gathering is a cultural offering, a public event, and a declaration of belonging. Through rhythm, story, and shared space, it reimagines what it means to perform, to gather, and to be in community through the lens of Street and Club Dance.
