Kia the Key & Company Artistic Director Shakia Barron seeks three street dancers for a NEFA funded project, “The Gathering”. Looking for Lockers, Poppers, Breakers, Hip-Hop and House dancers. Kia the Key & Company will premiere a new evening-length work to be performed outdoors in Springfield, MA August 2025. Week-long intensive rehearsals for this project will take place once a month in May, June, and July of 2025. This is a paid opportunity with additional stipend for regional travel and accommodations. Audition is by invite-only, taking place at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA on Saturday, August 17th. The Gathering is an immersive outdoor performance experience that includes a vibrant Hip-Hop and House dance and music performance featuring the choreographic work of Shakia “The Key” Barron, performed by her project-based dance company, Kia the Key & Company. This performance will engage the public audience with history and appreciation of these cultural dance and music forms through narrative-based education and audience participation. From movement to poetry to live music/DJ, The Gathering will highlight the wide-reaching influence and interest of Hip-Hop and House dance while providing an opportunity for the general public to gather in celebration of these artforms and their contributions to contemporary culture. The Gathering is not only a performance but a place for both members of this culture and those new to this artform to gather, meet, and connect through the power of music and dance.
