National Commissions

National Commissions

As a choreographer, I am regularly called on across the nation to set work at universities and institutions because of my ability to connect with a wide range of students and create an environment that is safe, inclusive, and rooted in deep learning. These national commissions are a vital part of my choreographic research and practice. Each process is, first and foremost, an unforgettable educational experience, where students not only train and perform but also dive into the history, culture, and purpose of the dance forms they embody. My choreography centers the importance of honoring the roots of Street and Club dances. In these processes, students explore their own personal connections to the work, whether they are guests to the culture or part of its lineage, and learn from each other’s backgrounds, families, and ways of being. This communal exchange fosters empathy, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of each other and the world. This work is crucial, as I see myself as an ambassador of the form and I am committed to honoring its legacy and ensuring it continues with integrity, care, and love.

As a Smith College MFA graduate and core member of Kia The Key & Company, Laura Osterhaus has played a vital role in the success of these national commissions Laura was not only a student in my classes and a performer in my repertory, but she became a trusted creative partner whose presence helped deepen the process. As a white woman working within Street and Club dance forms, Laura understands her role as a guest in these cultures and models how to engage with deep respect, humility, and care. Her presence offers a powerful example for students who share her background, showing that honoring these forms means listening, uplifting, and actively working against appropriation. Laura has assisted me on Same Place, Different Journey, One World, Don’t Hold Your Breath, Elevate, and Waves. Having her in the space brought a level of support, insight, and consistency that allowed the work to flourish, especially during intensive residencies that lasted as little as three days. Her ability to hold the room, assist in movement generation, and connect with dancers contributed to the impact and reach of these pieces. I’m deeply grateful for our collaboration and the trust we built. Laura’s support has been instrumental, allowing me to focus more fully on shaping the work with clarity and vision.
