Through the Decades

Through the Decades (2017)

Through the Decades is a choreographic tribute to the evolution of Street and Club dance forms, showcasing foundational styles such as Locking, Popping, Breaking, Party Social Dances, House Dance, and Jersey Club. The work was set on dancers from the Connecticut College Dance Department, following a competitive audition process that prioritized both technical skill and a willingness to engage with the cultural significance of these forms. More than a celebration of vibrant movement, the piece invites dancers and audiences to consider what it means to be a respectful guest within Hip-Hop and Street Dance culture. The performers were asked to reflect on the historical roots of each style and to approach the work with integrity, honoring and uplifting the traditions they were embodying without appropriating them. Through the Decades has become one of my signature repertory works. It offers an energetic, educational, and powerful journey through decades of Black cultural expression and innovation. The work encourages deep engagement with the legacy and ongoing evolution of these influential dance forms.
